In 1766, after Speaker of the House John Robinson died, Richard Henry Lee sought to become the Speaker of the House of Burgesses. He lost the vote to Peyton Randolph.

Richard Henry Lee, Peyton Randolph, and five others were elected by the First Virginia Convention in 1774 to serve as Virginia's delegates to the Continetal Congress.1

Richard Henry Lee was one of the 56 people who signed the Declaration of Independence in 1776.
