Dr. Matthew Pope was a military surgeon in the British army. He joined the rebel army during the American Revolution, at which time he was married to Elizabeth Armistead. During a raid by Col. Banastre Tarleton along Elk Creek in Hanover County, Dr. Pope was at the home of his wife's father Westwood Armistead. A British soldier entered the house as Elizabeth Armistead was on the stairs. He demanded that she reveal the location of her husband, or he would shoot her. She declined, the soldier fired but aimed his shot into the ceiling instead of into her, and Dr. Pope was not captured.

After Elizabeth Armistead died, Dr. Matthew Pope married another Elizabeth, "Betty" Grymes.1
