Lillian Ratcliffe was known as "Stokes." She was friends with Bill Tuck, who was born in South Boston and was elected governor of Virginia in 1945. He would fly her to Richmond several times a year to host events and organize the meals, since his wife was unable to serve in that role. In South Boston, she would get phone calls from Bill Tuck inviting himself to her house for a meal, and occasionally would just say "Sorry, but it's just not convenient today."
